Jeremiah Hurst celebrates his first Late Model victory in more than four years.
What won the race: Third-starting Jeremiah Hurst of Dubuque, Iowa, used an inside move to take control on the opening lap and never looked back en route to a dominant flag-to-flag victory in Saturday's 30-lap Dirt Stars at Davenport Speedway. Hurst, the 2020 Midwest LateModel Racing Association champ, topped the IMCA Late Model field for a $3,000 payday and his first win since Sept. 18, 2020, on the DIRTcar Summer Nationals at Peoria (Ill.) Speedway aboard the No. 58 Roberts Motorsports entry.
Quotable: “I don’t care about the money, I just like to win races,” Hurst said. “I gotta thank (car owner) Joel (Callahan) — he’s probably at home watching (and) I hope I made him proud there. I had a little help ... I can’t say his name, but he helped me out today and it made this car liven up."
Key notes: Hurst noted that he has his own modified and plans to "get it going" in 2025. ... Fourth-starting Travis Denning used Davenport's rim to take second on lap three and finished a distant 2.592 seconds back. ... Seventh-starting Matt Ryan grabbed third on lap six and rounded out the podium. ... Ninth-starting C.J. Horn slipped by Chris Lawrence for fourth on lap nine. ... The pole-starting Lawrence, of Colona, Ill., faded to eighth. ... Evan Miller, winner of Friday's $700 warmup event, improved 11 positions and placed sixth. ... Cruz Birkhofer, Brian's son, gained five spots and finished ninth. ... The race was completed without incident and lasted eight minutes, with 11 starters completing 30 laps. ... Nick Marolf, Friday's runner-up, scratched.
On the move: Evan Miller of Silvis, Ill., started 17th and finished sixth.
Winner's sponsors: Hurst's Joel Callahan-owned Capital Race Car carries sponsorship from Callahan Painting, Windsor Park Retirement Community, Commerce Park Place Apartments, Riverbend Retirement Community, Grand Haven Retirement Community, Nelson Tire Recycling, The Gardens Apartments, Capra Bank and Performance Bodies.
