Zack Mitchell and his teammates at Talladega Short Track.
What won the race: Making a thrilling three-wide pass for the lead, sixth-starting Zack Mitchell of Enoree, S.C., took command on the 15th lap, then outdueled Cory Hedgecock in the final laps for a $15,097 Red Farmer Tribute victory at Talladega Short Track. Hedgecock, hung up by a lapped car heading for the white flag, finished 0.579 of a second behind at the checkers with Sam Seawright in third.
Quotable: “I really didn’t know where to be, it kinda got a little choppy right there in (turns) one and two, up top,” Mitchell said. “That’s where I felt the best at, but it kinda felt like it was starting to latch up right there in both corners on the bottom. Right after that (lap-35) restart, probably the last 10 laps, I finally found it and got me a groove going and caught the lapped traffic … I knew Cory (Hedgecock) pulled up beside me, but man, I was driving the wheels off that thing.”
Key notes: Mitchell notched his third HTF victory of the season. ... A low-running Mitchell made a three-wide pass to take command on the 15th lap with Cory Hedgecock in the middle of the track and Ethan Dotson on the high side. ... Dale McDowell led the first two laps with Cory Hedgecock leading laps 3-14 before Mitchell took command (Hedgecock was also scored as the leader on lap 48). ... Friday's winner Ethan Dotson looked strong early on the high side while battling for the lead with Mitchell and Hedgecock, but he faded in the second half of the race with a deflating right-rear tire and ended up 11th. ... The race was slowed by two cautions, the first on the 26th lap when David McCoy slowed on the frontstretch. ... A second yellow appeared on lap 35 for a slowing Kaden Honeycutt. .... Race honoree Red Farmer, 92 years young, paced the field in his Late Model (he took a few laps at speed ahead of the event and narrowly avoided the turn-two wall at one point).
On the move: Joseph Joiner of Milton, Fla., started 15th and finished eighth.
