What won the race: Winning his second straight Honor the Legends 60, fifth-starting Zack Dohm of Cross Lanes, W.VA., earned $10,000 for Saturday's triumph in the 60-lap feature at Beckley Motorsports Park. He beat Henry Hornsby III to the finish line by a comfortable half-straightaway margin.
Quotable: “I love this track. I’ve always run pretty good here,” Dohm said. “We just do better in longer races in general, but at the beginning of this one I didn’t think we was gonna go anywhere. Then the tires started working, we started picking a few of ‘em off, and every time we passed one my brother would show me we’d pulled them pretty good and I figured if we could get up there to Fred and Ty we might have a shot.”
Key notes: Dohm cruised the final 20 laps, easily pulling away on restarts. ... Outside front-row starter Freddie Carpenter dominated early in the race, but the low-running Dohm took command when Carpenter got into the turn-four guardrail shortly after a pair of second-half restarts. Carpenter fell to ninth at the finish. ... Tyler Carpenter ran second much of the first half of the race, but a broken left-front suspension knocked him from contention. ... Runner-up Hornsby said he was "just tickled that we could keep up with the field" after struggling in recent weeks. … Mike Benedum set a new track record in qualifying and started from the pole position in the feature but settled for a fourth-place finish. ... Beckley officials, competitors and fans recently mourned the loss of 49-year-old Ed Horton of Kegley, W.Va., who in recent years served as the track’s racing operations manager while also competing in the mini-stock and truck divisions at the 3/8-mile oval. Horton died June 19.
On the move: Ryan Montgomery of Fairmont, W.Va., started at the rear of the field — the 16th spot — after a heat-race incident and charged forward to finish third.
Winner's sponsors: Dohm’s Longhorn Chassis is powered by a Vic Hill Racing Engine and sponsored by Dohm Cycles, Octane Race Products, Way Floor Covering, Jen’s Hair Care and Mountain Top RV Park.
Points chase: John Vandal is the track’s reigning Limited Late Model champion.
