Wil Herrington raises a fist in triumph at Needmore Speedway.
What won the race: Series points leader Wil Herrington of Hawkinsville, Ga., led 50 laps from the pole to capture Saturday's Crate Racin' USA Series debut at Needmore Speedway. Herrington earned $4,000 for his fourth series victory of 2020.
Quotable: "I knew we had a fast car last night in the practice session, so after a few laps, I brought it in and put it in the trailer for tonight,” Herrington said. “The timing of the caution flags also went our way tonight because about the time we would get bogged up in lapped traffic, a caution flag would come out and I would have a clear race track in front of me for the restart.”
Key notes: Herrington took the checkered flag 1.068 seconds ahead ofJimmy Thomas of Phenix City, Ala. ... Thomas was light at the scales and penalized to the 25th finishing position. That gave the runner-up finish to Jordy Nipper of Macon, Ga. ... Saturday's feature was slowed by several caution flags and lasted over 43 minutes. ... Twelve drivers completed 50 laps. ... Cody Overton of Evans, Ga., was the night's fastest qualifier, but he retired from the third position during a lap-three caution. ... While his feature run ended in disappointment, Overton at least earned a unique prize for fast time honors: a three-day trip to Panama City Beach, Fla., from Tammy Thomas, a senior account representative at iHeart Markets Media Group in Columbus and Albany, Ga. … Overton also received $100 from Scorpion Race Cars of Phenix City, Ala. ... Series officials recently announced that the second leg of its King of the Crates doubleheader at North Alabama Speedway has been rescheduled for Oct. 10 after rain forced the event’s postponement.
On the move: Jody Knowles of Tyrone, Ga., started 24th and finished seventh.
Winner's sponsors: Herrington drives a CVR Race Car with sponsorship from Last Air and Electrical, Herrington Automotive, Montgomery Logging, Joey Reynolds Trucking and Dowdy Construction.
Points chase: Herrington extended his series points lead over Cruz Skinner.
