Carder Miller scored his first series victory at Smoky Mountain.
What won the race: Carder Miller of Salem, Va., outdueled Matt Henderson of Loudon, Tenn., to narrowly win the American Crate All-Star feature during the opening night of Smoky Mountain Speedway's King of the Mountain Championship on Friday, earning $2,000 for his first victory on the Crate Late Model tour.
Key notes: Miller's victory came in the opening race of the tour’s weekend doubleheader at the Maryville, Tenn., oval. … Miller won by 0.689 seconds over Henderson, who settled for the runner-up position after leading the first two laps, along with laps 19 through 25. ... Miller was credited with leading a total of 21 laps, which included lap three through 18, along with the last five circuits. ... Series point leader, Trevor Sise of Knoxville, Tenn., finished 13th on Friday and remains one of only two repeat winners this season. ... After winning the Topless Outlaw Late Model series feature earlier in the evening at Smoky Mountain, Cory Hedgecock of Loudon, Tenn., had worked his way up to second place on lap 26, before experiencing trouble on lap 28 and finishing 19th. ... Friday's feature was slowed by three caution flags and lasted just over 22 minutes. ... The top 16 finishers were credited with completing all 30 laps. ... The American Crate All-Stars return to Smoky Mountain on Saturday, for a $3,000-to-win feature, which marks the last points race of the season.
