Joseph Joiner reached victory lane Saturday at Tri-County Speedway.
What won the race: Polesitter Joseph Joiner of Milton, Fla., dominated Saturday’s Southern All Star Battle in the Swamp at Tri-County Speedway. He earned $4,000 in taking the checkers ahead of reigning series champ Billy Franklin in the first-ever tour event at the Alabama oval.
Key notes: Joiner led all 40 laps to capture his third career Southern All Star Series victory. ... Seven drivers completed 40 laps ... Michael Page was among early retirees. ... Spencer Hughes retired after just three laps. ... Billy Franklin of Calera, Ala., lowered the track record in time trials with a 13.310 second lap. ... Colton Leyendecker (604) and Kevin Mitchell (602) won Crate Late Model features. ... Saturday’s event was the first on the track since it was reconfigured to make its circular layout more of an oval. The extensive offseason project lengthened the track from its original quarter-mile layout to a 3/10-mile oval and decreased the banking in the corners from 18 to 14 degrees. In all, 180 loads of clay were trucked in to complete the reconfiguration and completely resurface the entire track.
On the move: Payton Freeman of Commerce, Ga., started 15th and finished seventh.
Winner's sponsors: Joiner’s Capital Race Car is sponsored by Hunt the Front, Trading Paint, Marshall Industrial Technologies, The Law Offices of Cole and Davis, Three Trade Consultants, DirtCarLift.com, Dirt Track Bank, Base Racing Fuels, Wehrs Machine, QA1, Jones Racing Products, VonBon Products, and Go Lithium.
Points chase: Entering Saturday’s race, rookie contender Payton Freeman (266 points) led the standings after three events with reigning champion Billy Franklin (232) of Calera, Ala., second and Austin Franklin (214) of Montevallo, Ala., third.
