Jonathan Davenport hugs the inside groove at Batesville.
What won the race: Overtaking B.J. Robinson with eight laps remaining, nationally top-ranked Jonathan Davenport of Blairsville, Ga., captured Friday’s Bad Boy 98 weekend opener at Batesville Motor Speedway on the Comp Cams Super Dirt Series. Robinson, who went by polesitter Ashton Winger and Davenport with a third-to-first move on a lap-14 restart, finished 1.866 seconds behind at the finish with Billy Moyer Jr. in third.
Quotable: “My guys gave me a great car once again,” Davenport said. “We was a little tight in the rubber, but we was really good in the slick, so I could move around a little bit. (Robinson) just didn’t know that outside was a little bit better than the bottom. It had some character to it, so you had to move around in (turns) one and two. (Turns) three and four was just locked down. I kinda gave up that restart on the bottom so I could be on the top and just hopefully he would make a mistake through the holes or something like that.”
Key notes: Davenport, No. 1 in DirtonDirt.com's Top 25 power rankings, notched his 11th overall victory of the season but first of his career on the Comp Cams circuit. ... Davenport's car owner Lance Landers lives in Batesville. ... Ashton Winger's lap-17 flat tire drew the last of three cautions; he led the first 14 laps but slipped back to third on the mid-race restart. ... Billy Moyer gave up fourth and headed pitside during the yellow. ... A lap-14 yellow appeared for Joe Godsey. ... Timothy Culp brought out a lap-two caution and was towed away with front-end damage. ... Rain threatened the program and caused a brief delay at about 10 p.m. and again just before the Late Model feature about 11:15 p.m. ... Fast qualifier Billy Moyer Jr. made his first start since breaking a metatarsal bone in his right foot a month earlier. ... Saturday’s finale features a 68-lap, $12,000-to-win main event. … Friday’s Joe Garrison Memorial honored the late chassis builder and founder of GRT Race Cars in Greenbrier, Ark., who died in 2019 after battling cancer.
On the move: Terry Phillips of Springfield, Mo., started 10th and finished sixth.
Winner's sponsors: Davenport’s Double L Motorsports Longhorn Chassis is sponsored by Nutrien Ag Solutions, ASC Warranty, Spartan Mowers, Mark Martin Automotive, Lucas Oil, Mega Plumbing of the Carolinas, Center Point Graphics, Midwest Sheet Metal and Fatheadz Eyewear.
