What won the race: Fifth-starting Hudson O'Neal of Martinsville, Ind., overtook fellow Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series regular Kyle Bronson for the lead on lap 10 and cruised the rest of the way to capture Saturday's 30-lap Late Model Lidlifter at Eldora Speedway. The 21-year-old driver beat Darrell Lanigan by a hefty 5.628 seconds to earn $5,000 and his first-ever Sunoco American Late Model Series victory.
Quotable: "I struggled here so bad last year and it's good to come back and have a good race car and outrun some good guys," O'Neal said. "It's definitely just a great, great overall deal for my guys, and it gives us a lot of confidence to come back here in two or three weeks and then come back here for the Dream as well. We came here to learn and hopefully get a little bit of a notebook to carry some big money out of here. There's a lot of money to be had here (in 2021)."
Key notes: The second-starting Bronson slipped to a fourth-place finish after leading laps 1-9. ... Devin Moran made contact with Jacob Hawkins while attempting to execute a slide job for second place on lap eight; Moran survived to finish third while Hawkins was forced to retire with front suspension damage, relegating him to a 19th-place finish. ... The feature was slowed by only two caution flags and lasted slightly over 17 minutes. ... The top-nine finishers completed all 30 laps. ... Saturday’s event was the first Late Model race at Eldora open to all entries since 2019; the track ran two invite-only events amid Covid-19 restrictions in 2020. … While only allowing limited capacity, it was also the first Late Model event with fans at Eldora since 2019. Full spectator capacity returns in time for the double Late Model Dream week at Eldora June 9-12. … The ALMS tour returns to Eldora on May 30 and Sept. 5, with all three events paying $5,000 to win.
Winner's sponsors: O’Neal’s Double Down Motorsports Rocket Chassis is powered by a Cornett Racing Engine and sponsored by Lazydays RV, O’Neal’s Salvage and Recycling, WR1 Sim Chassis and Lucas Oil.
Points chase: The event was the season opener for the Sunoco ALMS tour. Rusty Schlenk of McClure, Ohio, is the most recent series champion after earning his fifth title in 2019.
