What won the race: Recovering from early-race struggles that briefly dropped him for the lead back to fifth, Ashton Winger of Hampton, Ga., regained the point when Michael Page spun while trying to lap a slower car on lap 27 of Saturday's 44-lap Roscoe Smith Classic at Senoia Raceway. Winger led the test of the Southern All Star Series-sanctioned event for a $4,044 victory in becoming the 11th winner in 11 series events.
Quotable: “We’ve raced like 30 times this year and it’s hard not to get emotional,” Winger said in victory lane. “I’ve had the time of my life the past two years and it’s really, really been tough this year on us. We just haven't had a lot go our way … But this feels so awesome."
Key notes: The second-starting Winger led the race's first three laps before handing over the lead to polesitter Austin Horton, who led three laps before Michael Page moved ahead on lap seven. ... Page pulled away from the field after getting out front but ran into trouble when he spun while trying to lap a slower car on lap 27. ... The victory is Winger's fourth career feature win with the Southern All Stars and it came in the touring series' 11th-ever visit to the Georgia oval. ... Joseph Joiner of Milton, Fla., finished in the runner-up position for the second consecutive year at Senoia, crossing the finish line 5.115 seconds behind Winger. ... Saturday's feature was slowed by seven separate incidents, lasted nearly 43 minutes and saw only the top-eight finishers complete all 44 laps. ... The Roscoe Smith Classic honors the father of longtime series competitor and Senoia native, Clint Smith, who is a two-time series champion (2000, ’03) and holds 13 career SAS victories. ... The Southern All Stars return to Senoia on June 19.
On the move: Heath Hindman of Signal Mountain, Tenn., was 19th early in the race before charging to finish seventh.
Winner's sponsors: Winger’s Rocket Chassis sponsored by E-Z-Go, Keyser Mfg., Integra Shocks, Johnny Doan Plumbing, Boyd-Bilt Fabrication, Spring-Pro, Collins Signs, Turkey Creek Snacks, The Realty Queen Team and Advanced Technology Motorsports.
