Shawn Jett heads for victory at Tyler County's Topless 50.
What won the race: Inheriting the lead from Henry Hornsby III on lap 16 after he went up in smoke, second-starting Shawn Jett of Pennsboro, W.Va., led the remainder of the 27th annual Topless 50 on Sunday night at Tyler County Speedway to earn $5,000. He took the checkers 0.699 seconds ahead of polesitter Jacob Hawkins.
Key notes: Jett, the defending Tyler County track champion, captured the biggest win of his career. He led laps 1-3 and 7-8 before regaining command for good with Hornsby's demise on the 16th circuit. ... Jacob Hawkins grabbed the lead on lap four — after relinquishing his pole starting spot and taking the green from third because he was called for jumping the initial green flag — but was forced to the rear of the field on lap six when he suddenly slowed and triggered a caution flag. He drove back to second by lap 37 but couldn't overcome Jett. ... Jared Hawkins, Jacob's older brother, was running third on lap 23 when a flat right-rear tire caused him to draw a caution flag. He finished 13th. ... Caution flags on laps 37 and 47 gave Hawkins shots at the win, but Jett turned back the threat.
On the move: Kyle Thomas of Pennsboro, W.Va., started 17th and finished third.
Winner's sponsors: Jett's Rocket Chassis sports sponsorship from Jacksonburg Pit Stop, Jam Oil & Gas, Letter Rip Vinyl Graphics and Palmer's Funeral Home.
