What won the race: Ross Bailes of Clover, S.C., stunned race-long leader Brett Hamm at the checkers Friday to capture Carolina Speedway's $4,000 Gaston County Shrine Race on the Carolina Clash Super Late Model Series. Bailes won by 0.141 of a second and contact at the checkers put Hamm into the wall and sent him spinning toward turn one.
Quotable: “We got in that lapped traffic and I knew that was my only shot there. I thought I had him cleared off (turn) four,” Bailes said. “But I guess I didn’t. I hate I put him in the wall. I think I about put me in the wall. But heck, man, we’re coming to the checkered for four-grand. I had to do what I had to do."
Key notes: Hamm, who lead 39 of 40 laps, enduring a number of restarts. ... Hamm said he made the wrong move amid traffic on the last lap. "I decided to dive to the outside and just got the right-rear (tire) in the crumbs and slipped and just left an opening there," Hamm said. "He took it. He did what he had to do." ... Zack Mitchell made a bid to get under Hamm on the 25th lap, but after the frontrunners appeared to touch in turn three with Mitchell getting out of shape, Mitchell pulled up lame and retired. ... Thirteen cars finished 40 laps. … Dean Bowen and Mike Huey slowed for early cautions. ... The race serves as a fund-raiser for Shriners Hospitals.
On the move: Benji Hicks of Mount Airy, N.C., started 14th and finished third.
Winner's sponsors: Bailes drove a Billy Hicks-owned Longhorn Chassis powered by a Clements Racing Engine and sponsored by H&H Auto Sales, Felony Farms, Bailes Construction, Hoosier Tire South, Fred Caldwell Chevrolet and Bilstein Shocks.
