Payton Looney takes the checkers for a $7,000 Lake Ozark victory.
What won the race: Rebounding from electrical issues during hot laps, Payton Looney of Republic, Mo., used a persistent low line around Lake Ozark Speedway to advance from the seventh starting spot and win Saturday’s 40-lap Lucas Oil Midwest LateModel Association-sanctioned Battle at the Beach. He overtook Hall of Famer Billy Moyer for the lead on lap 37 and marched on to beat the Batesville, Ark., driver by 2.255 seconds for the $7,000 top prize.
Quotable: "Those last few yellows were what I needed," Looney said. "Down there on the bottom, I don't know if some other cars were running too low, but it was throwing some water down there and it was real slimy so I needed some green-flag laps to kind of blow that off. Once I could get in and kind of get the right-rear set I could come off the corner really great."
Key notes: Looney, who now races on a limited schedule, recorded his first MLRA triumph of 2021 and the fifth of his career. He made just his second start since Memorial Day weekend's Show-Me 100. "I'm semi-retired but it feels nice to come back and get a win like this," Looney said. … With Moyer still looking for a buyer for his entire race team, the Hall of Famer made his first start since June's double Dreams weekend at Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio. He led laps 1-36 off the outside pole before settling for second. Third-place Chad Simpson recorded his first podium finish of 2021 with MLRA. ... Points leader Tony Jackson Jr. started from the pole position but never led a lap and finished fifth. ... Fifth-starting Justin Duty of Mulino, Ore., retired on lap 17. … Five caution flags slowed the feature. ... After Friday's scheduled $3,000-to-win event was rained, officials bumped Saturday's purse up to $7,0000-to-win.
On the move: Dustin Atkinson of Lebanon, Mo., started 21st and finished 11th.
Winner's sponsors: Looney’s Capital Race Car is powered by a Cornett engine and sponsored by Atnip Motorsports, Specialty Risk Insurance, Atnip Express, Duvall Electric, Penske Racing Shocks and Swift Springs.
