What won the race: Seventh-starting Payton Freeman of Commerce, Ga., took the lead on lap 32 and paced the final 18 circuits to win Saturday's fourth annual Dirt Slingers Classic feature with the Southern All Star Series, collecting $5,000 at I-75 Raceway.
Quotable: "Tonight, after we qualified and got a little hot-lap session, we still felt like we were missing just a little something," Freeman said. “We went to work after that hot-lap session and changed some stuff, and man, we seemed to find it … I think that was the ticket tonight to be able to go around there straight and keep the tires on it."
Key notes: The victory is the second of Freeman's career with the Southern All Star Series and further stretches his point lead. ... Winner at I-75 with the Iron-Man Racing Series earlier this year and leader of the first 14 laps, Cory Hedgecock of Loudon, Tenn., settled for the runner-up position, 1.629 seconds behind Freeman. ... Initially crossing the finish line in third place, Zack Mitchell of Enoree, S.C., was disqualified and credited with finishing 25th. ... Thirteenth-starting Ryan King of Seymour, Tenn., finished fourth. ... Billy Franklin of Calera, Ala., advanced 11 positions to finish 12th. ... Dale McDowell of Chickamauga, Ga., led laps 15 through 31, before experiencing trouble that ended his race, relegating him to finish 19th. ... Saturday's feature, the first race at I-75 under the ownership of Shannon and Denise Littleton, was slowed by three separate incidents and lasted 27 minutes, with 11 competitors completing all 50 laps.
On the move: Sam Seawright of Fort Payne, Ala., started 12th and finished third.
Winner's sponsors: Freeman’s Capital Race Car is powered by a Cornett Racing Engine (Ford) and sponsored by Madison County Auto Parts, Freeman Plumbing and Shelton Trucking, Schaeffer Oil and Hoosier Tire.
