Sam Seawright waves as he maneuvers the frontstretch for the final time.
What won the race: Third-starting Sam Seawright of Rainsville, Ala., overtook front-row starter Brandon Williams on the 18th lap Saturday at Boyd’s Speedway for a $5,000 Cabin Fever victory on the Valvoline Iron-Man Racing Series. Seawright raised his left fist in taking the checkers 2.161 seconds ahead of Hall of Famer Ronnie Johnson in the chilly, late afternoon 40-lapper.
Quotable: “I can’t say enough about how great the car was. We’ve been struggling lately and Michael Page come on board with us, and he’s got that thing dialed in,” Seawright said. “I was just sitting in there holding the wheel. I paced myself pretty good the first couple of laps, because I knew the car was so good, I’d be there at the end."
Key notes: Seawright's victory follows his 2021 Schaeffer's Southern Nationals triumph at Boyd's. ... On Saturday, Seawright muscled under Williams on the frontstretch to lead just before halfway. ... Williams, who led laps 2-17, faded after losing the lead and retired on lap 33 running sixth. ... Polesitter John Ownbey led the first lap and retired on the 19th lap running second. ... Robby Mason held the second spot from laps 20-28 but slipped back a few spots and lost a right-rear wheel and smashed the turn-one wall on a lap-34 restart. ... Half the 20-car field completed 40 laps. ... It was a non-points event for the Valvoline Iron-Man Racing Southern Series. ... The event was pushed back from its original Jan. 29 date by wintry weather.
On the move: Dillon Crim of Eastaboga, Ala., started 10th and finished third.
Winner's sponsors: Seawright's Black Diamond Chassis is sponsored by Agcor Steel, J&R Lumber, Farm Systems Inc., Grow Pediatric Therapy and Stuckey Enterprises.
