What won the race: Leading all 40 laps from the pole, Dustin Mitchell of Pine Level, N.C., won Saturday's second annual Billy Cagle Memorial feature at Sumter Speedway, earning $5,007. The victory is Mitchell's second consecutive and the second of his career with the Steel Block Bandits Dirt Late Model Challenge after winning the season-opening Batten Memorial at Halifax County Motor Speedway.
Quotable: “(The track) locked down pretty soon there. I could feel it already taking rubber probably five laps into the race,” said Mitchell. “I went soft on tires so I was just kinda riding in the corner, riding out, just trying to keep it up under me so I would know I would have enough for the end.”
Key notes: Brian Strickland of Lumberton, N.C., claimed the runner-up position, 2.458 seconds behind Mitchell. ... Derick Quade of Mechanicsville, Md., finished third. ... By finishing seventh, Jay Sessoms of Stanley, N.C., will receive a gift certificate from Ashleigh Shirey for a set of Velocita-USA gloves. ... After running second throughout the entire race, Michael Batten of Rocky Mount, N.C., suffered a flat tire on the last lap and limped to finish 11th. ... Winner of last year's inaugural Billy Cagle Memorial, Steve Banal of Rock Hill, S.C., completed only six laps and finished 23rd. ... Saturday's feature, the opener of Sumter's 65th season and a race which honors the late racing parts distributor and proprietor of Cagle Racing Automotive in Hopkins, S.C., was slowed by three separate incidents, including a 15-minute red flag on lap 19 and lasted 38 minutes, with 15 competitors completing all 40 laps.
On the move: Russell Erwin of Beaverdam, Va., started 16th and finished eighth.
Winner's sponsors: Mitchell’s C&R Motorsports Longhorn Chassis is powered by a Victory Race Engine and sponsored by TWA Concrete, The Muffler Place, ColeBrooke Custom Homes, Honeycutt Custom Cabinets, Harry's Tire and Auto, The Fat Pelican Bare, R.W. Mason Roofing, Superior Automotive, HST Suspension and Penske Racing Shocks.
