Tanner English races to victory at Fairbury Speedway’s Allen Memorial.
What won the race: Driving his own car, third-starting Tanner English of Benton, Ky., took the lead with an inside move on lap four and paced the final 26 circuits to win the 30-lap Pappy and Bob Allen Memorial at Fairbury Speedway on Saturday, collecting $5,000.
Quotable: “The track was fast, which was expected with the rain they got,” English said. “This is usually a track that I am not good at. It is more of a Mike Spatola or someone that likes to bag the cushion. I figured out a line where I could stay off the cushion and still take advantage of it.”
Key notes: Ryan Unzicker of El Paso, Ill., advanced seven positions and challenged English late, but settled for the runner-up spot, four-tenths of a second back. ... Defending track champion Mike Spatola of Manhattan, Ill., ran in second place from lap 13 through 26 before getting passed by Unzicker on a late restart and finished third. ... After leading the first three laps from the pole, Kevin Weaver of Gibson City, Ill., finished fourth. ... Jayme Zidar of Greenfield, Wis., made heavy contact with the wall at the start of the second heat race and was unable to compete for the remainder of the night. ... Saturday's feature was slowed by four cautions and lasted 20 minutes, with eight competitors completing all 30 laps. … Fairbury has another big event on the horizon for Super Late Models with June 18’s stop on the DIRTcar Summer Nationals tour.
On the move: Ryan Unzicker of El Paso, Ill., started ninth and finished second.
