Bobby Pierce takes the checkers at Tri-City Speedway, earning $10,000.
What won the race: Rebounding from an off-night, Bobby Pierce of Oakwood, Ill., swept around Dennis Erb Jr. on the 27th lap Friday at Tri-City Speedway and raced to a $10,000 DIRTcar Summer Nationals victory. Pierce, who broke the yoke on his driveshaft while leading the previous night in Davenport, Iowa, finished 3.028 seconds ahead of Erb for his 42nd career tour victory.
Quotable: "It was a hard race. ... Starting in that second row, it's been making the work for it night in, night out. I just can't get that front-row spot," Pierce said.
Key notes: Pierce won his second straight start at Tri-City; he won June 3's World of Outlaws Case Late Model Series event. ... Five cautions slowed Friday's 40-lapper, including on laps 17 and 18 when Daryn Klein and then Mark Voigt got into the backstretch wall. ... Joe Godsey spun in turn four on the 19th lap. ... The first caution appeared on the sixth lap when Preston Luckman stopped with a broken nosepiece (another caution appeared on the ensuing restart when a driver struck the restart cone). ... A lap-nine caution dropped for a slowing Trevor Gundaker. ... The Kevin and Tammy Gundaker-owned track hosted the tour for the 24th time.
On the move: Ryan Unzicker of El Paso, Ill., started 19th and finished sixth.
Winner's sponsors: Pierce’s Pierce Race Car is sponsored by Hoker Trucking, Allgayer Inc., Rio Grande Waste Services, Mesilla Valley Transportation, Carnaghi Towing & Repair, Extreme Electric, Toyota of Danville, Quality Paint & Body, Base Racing Fuels, Senior Life Insurance and the Vermilion County Bobcats.
