What won the race: Second-starting Michael Chilton of Salvisa, Ky., used the outside line to his advantage on the initial start and led all 40 laps of Saturday's second annual Charlie Swartz Classic at Portsmouth Raceway Park, earning $5,000. The victory is the ninth of Chilton's career with the Valvoline Iron-Man Racing Series, placing him into a tie for first on the tour's all-time win list.
Quotable: "We had a really good car there in the first half of the race, I felt like we were better than Robby and we were pulling away from him and then the thing started to kinda rubber-up in some spots and I just kinda feel like I got lost on the track, couldn't really get back into a good rhythm," Chilton said. "The last 15 laps there, I was just playing defense, I know Robby was all over me and I appreciate him running me clean. I know we kinda got locked-down on the bottom and he could've knocked me out of the way probably and won."
Key notes: Polesitter Robby Hensley of Walton, Ky., failed to lead a lap but kept pace with Chilton throughout the race, finishing 0.531 seconds back. ... Fourth-starting R.J. Conley of Wheelersburg, Ohio, moved into third place on lap seven and finished there. ... Lucas Crooks of Grayson, Ky., the 15-year-old grandson of Charlie Swartz, advanced four positions and finished eighth. ... Racing in the event that honors his Hall of Fame father, Audie Swartz of Minford, Ohio, started 22nd and finished 14th. … Defending event winner, Josh Bocook of Wheelersburg, Ohio, retired after 11 laps, finishing 19th. ... The Iron-Man tour’s debut at Portsmouth was slowed by three cautions and lasted 24 minutes, with 14 competitors completing 40 laps.
On the move: Lucas Crooks of Grayson, Ky., started 12th and finished eighth.
