Josh Rice picked up $5,000 in the Junebug Rowland Memorial.
What won the race: Josh Rice of Verona, Ky., led all 40 laps from the pole at Richmond Raceway on Saturday night, dominating the Junebug Rowland Memorial feature and collecting $5,000. The victory was the first of Rice's career with the Ultimate Heart of America Series and guaranted him a starting position in Richmond's 35th annual Paul "Butterball" Wooldridge Memorial race scheduled for Aug. 20.
Quotable: "Yeah, it's been a long time since I've won here," Rice said. "I had never won at Ponderosa and then to come here and win, it's pretty cool. We're pretty dominant right now, and if I can keep from tearing the hell out of it, then it seems like we win. We've gotten really good. We went and tested a few weeks ago and found some stuff and we should've won just about every time out since then."
Key notes: The victory was Rice's second of the weekend after he topped the Valvoline Iron-Man Racing Series field for $10,000 in Friday's Johnny Mulligan Classic at Ponderosa Speedway. ... Fourth-starting Dustin Linville of Bryantsville, Ky., was a distant runner-up to Rice. ... Justin Rattliff battled with Linville during the first laps after multiple restarts but settled for the third position. ... Reigning series champion and second place finisher with the DIRTcar Summer Nationals at Shadyhill Raceway on Thursday, Tristan Chamberlain of Richmond, Ind., finished fifth. ... Josh Putnam and Zack Dohm made contact in a few times after an early restart while battling for second. Dohm was sent to the tail for contact that sent Putnam spinning in turn two. During the ensuing caution, both drivers stopped at the end of the backstretch to rehash the incident and eventually both drivers were disqualified and sent to the pits. ... Saturday's feature, which honored Hugh "Junebug" Rowland, was slowed by five cautions.
On the move: Blake Creech of Richmond, Ind., started 14th and finished ninth.
Winner's sponsors: Rice’s Rick Jones-owned Rocket Chassis is powered by a Jay Dickens Racing Engine and sponsored by Sunesis Construction, Blox Spiked Ice, Extreme Sportswear, ATC Bolts & Fasteners, Maxwell Trucking, AirMax Heating and Cooling, Integra Shocks, Accu-Force Dynos & Testers, Schaeffer’s Oil and Slicker Graphics.
Points chase: Before Richmond: 1. James Rice (70); 2. Tristan Chamberlain (56); 3. Larry Martin Jr. (49); 4. Jeremy Creech (45); 5. Brady Lear (36).
