Hudson O'Neal (71) kept Bobby Pierce (32) at bay to win the Hoker 50.
What won the race: Hudson O'Neal of Martinsville, Ind., led all 50 laps from the pole and held off Bobby Pierce in the late going to win Tuesday's Hoker 50 presented by Hoker Trucking with the MARS Racing Series at Davenport (Iowa) Speedway. O'Neal earned $10,000 for the performance in his fifth overall win of the year — fourth in the last 11 races — which makes him a perfect three-for-three at quarter-mile configuration in his career.
Quotable: "It just seems like every time I come back here and get in the race car and hot lap, I'm just so comfortable," O'Neal said. "I don't know if it's just my race car. This place is kind of what I grew up racing; big circles and stuffI just like this place. ... I ran around that bottom a long time. Then that top, as I started to pass some of those lapped cars, it started to rubber up there. I just stayed up there and tried to keep my speed up. The longer we raced, the more it rubbered up. I saw Bobby a couple times trying to slide me, but I wasn't going to move off that top once I found that rubber."
Key notes: Hudson O'Neal's additonal wins at Davenport include July 6 with the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series and last July, also with the MARS Racing Series. ... Bobby Pierce of Oakwood, Ill., finished 0.396 seconds behind O'Neal, unable to make the go-ahead pass among his handful of side-by-side battles with the eventual winner. ... Third-place finisher Devin Moran of Dresden, Ohio, lowered the track record at the quarter-mile oval with a lap of 13.333 seconds in qualifying among Tuesday's 28-car field. ... Jonathan Davenport of Blairsville, Ga., finished 19th and retired from Tuesday's running on lap 32. The Eldora Million winner was fresh off back-to-back wins at the Silver Dollar Nationals and Monday's WoO event at Boone (Iowa) Speedway. ... MARS points leader Jason Feger of Bloomington, Ill., finished 10th. ... Boom Briggs, Jimmy Owens, Jeff Larson and Bob Gardner drew a collective four cautions throughout a feature that spanned 26 minutes, 31 seconds.
On the move: Justin Kay of Wheatland, Iowa, started 20th and finished seventh.
