Ross Robinson picked up $5,500 for his hometown victory.
What won the race: Making a triumphant return to his hometown track, Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series rookie Ross Robinson grabbed the lead from Danny Snyder on a lap-five restart and went on to capture Thursday's 50th Camp Barnes Benefit Race for Super Late Models at Georgetown Speedway. The 32-year-old driver turned back a late challenge from Rick Eckert to beat the York, Pa., veteran by 1.394 seconds for the $5,500 top prize.
Quotable: “When the caution come out and I don’t know if (Snyder) didn’t know that he could pick the top or what, but he went to the bottom and my mouth was watering,” Robinson said. “I feels good to be home. I can’t thank everybody enough who makes this happen. Kenny and Tracy Adams, they put us on the road this year to try and race with Lucas Oil and we absolutely, I feel like, got our teeth kicked in, but they never doubted us. They believe in us, and to me as a driver you can’t ask for better car owners than that.”
Key notes: Two weeks after completing his first tour of duty on the Lucas Oil Series with a 10th-place finish in the points standings, Robinson registered his first win of the 2022 season. He won twice at the half-mile oval last year. … Eckert, who started from the pole position but slipped back as far as fifth, reached second on lap 18 and closed to Robinson’s rear bumper with three laps remaining before a lapped car hampered his bid and forced him to settle for second. … Robinson’s wife and crew chief, Amanda, finished sixth in a rare appearance behind the wheel. … Snyder faded to a 10th-place finish after leading laps 1-5. … Caution flags flew on lap five for fourth-place Donald Lingo Jr. and lap seven for Mark Pettyjohn's spin. ... The Camp Barnes Benefit Race, which raises money for a summer camp operated by the Delaware State Police, was run at Georgetown for the first time after previously being contested at Delaware International Speedway. The race was postponed from Oct. 1. … The event led into Georgetown’s Mid-Atlantic Championship weekend, which includes Super Late Models competing in qualifying heats on Friday and a $7,000-to-win feature on Saturday.
On the move: Michael Lake of Uniontown, Pa., started 19th and finished seventh.
Winner's sponsors: Robinson's Longhorn Race Car is powered by a Clements Racing Engine and carries sponsorship from Stockley Materials, Iron Source, Frozen Farmer, Atlantic Prime Mortgage, First State Roof, SANY and Hardscrabble.
