What won the race: Will Herrington of Hawkinsville, Ga., grabbed the lead from Dustin Diem on the second circuit and never looked back en route to a dominant victory in Saturday afternoon's 40-lap 602 Crate Late Model feature at East Alabama Motor Speedway. The 26-year-old driver beat Wiley McDaniel for the finish line by 3.515 seconds for the $5,000 top prize.
Quotable: “I kind of noticed it looked like the D9 (Diem) had put a hard tire on while we were in staging, so my plan was to get the lead and then we could set the pace,” Herrington said. “I’ve drove a lot of stuff, but this was probably the best race car I ever sat in. This thing was dialed in.”
Key notes: Herrington was never seriously challenged despite dealing with nine caution flags that slowed the race. ... Herrington registered his fourth Crate Late Model win and seventh overall of the 2022 season. His three Super Late Model triumphs include a Southern All Star score in last month's Alabama State Championships at EAMS. ... Wiley McDaniel's runner-up finish came one spot ahead of his brother Brandon McDaniel. ... Allen Styck topped split-group time trials on Friday. ... A pair of consolation races on Saturday completed the starting lineup for the feature that kicked off the eight-division program topped by the evening's National 100 for Super Late Models.
On the move: Carson Ruark of Suwanee, Ga., started 22nd and finished sixth.
Winner's sponsors: Herrington’s David Poole Motorsports Rocket Chassis carries sponsorship from Poole’s Service Center, Klotz Lubricants and Hoosier Tire.
