Joseph Joiner poses with his family after winning Saturday's Bash at the Beach at Southern Raceway.
What won the race: Hometown pilot Joseph Joiner survived an action-packed 50-lap feature for a $10,000 payday in Saturday's sixth annual Bash at the Beach at Southern Raceway. Joiner grabbed the lead from pole-starting Dalton Cook on lap 15 and led the remainder of the distance en route to his seventh career Southern All Star Series triumph.
Quotable: “Friday night we had a good shot at a win but had to check up early to avoid contact from a slide job and it caused the engine to backfire through the carburetor, so we had to duck into the pits to replace the air filter,” Joiner said. “It was a challenging weekend, but for our first Super Late Model weekend of the year we couldn’t ask for much more.”
Key notes: Joiner finished 2.325 seconds ahead of Dalton Cook, who held firm in the runner-up spot after leading laps 1-14. … Four of Joiner's seven career Southern All Star victories have come at Southern. ... Contact between G.R. Smith and Ashton Winger as they battled for second early in the race led to Smith sliding through the infield in turns one and two to trigger a caution flag. Smith then hit Winger three times during the caution period and was disqualified; Winger retired after three laps with a flat tire. ... Pit-area altercations between the Smith and Winger teams resulted in Winger and his father, Gary, being arrested along with Scottie Parker, who oversees Smith's merchandise trailer (see DirtWire). ... Friday winner Billy Franklin of Calera, Ala., was collected in a multicar tangle on lap three that left him atop another competitor's car in turn two; the incident was triggered when Cook slid sideways off turn two at the front of the pack. … A dozen drivers completed 50 laps.
On the move: Matthew Brocato of Muscle Shoals, Ala., started 22nd and finished 12th.
Winner's sponsors: Joiner’s Draime-powered Longhorn Chassis is sponsored by Langenfelder Mechanical Contractors, Trading Paints, Base Racing Fuel, Dirt Track Bank, AFCO Racing Products, QA1, FK Rod Ends, Schoenfeld Headers, Wehrs Machine, Jones Racing Products, Earnhardt Technologies, MD3, Five Star Bodies, Gorsuch Performance, Bilstein Shocks, and ATC Bolts.
