Shannon Babb celebrates Friday's $10,555 Slocum 50 victory at 34 Raceway.
What won the race: Second-starting Shannon Babb of Moweaqua, Ill., led all 50 laps at 34 Raceway, winning Friday's $10,555 15th annual Slocum 50 feature. Babb earned his fourth career Lucas Oil Midwest LateModel Racing Association victory and his second Slocum 50 triumph.
Quotable: “I can’t say enough about this Longhorn Chassis. It’s come to fit me, it’s kinda more of my driving style again,” Babb said. “I knew I was terrible on the bottom in three and four, I just could not rotate that bottom at all. Starting front-row outside gives you the advantage of being able to drive wherever you want and that helped me through three and four and then one and two, obviously the bottom was really the best.”
Key notes: Babb previously won the race in 2018. ... Brandon Sheppard secured the runner-up position on lap 21 but never pressured Babb for the lead and finished 0.955 of a second back. ... Ryan Gustin marched through the field in the closing laps and finished third. ... Polesitter Jake Timm failed to lead a lap and finished fourth. ... A night after finishing second to his older brother at Davenport 11th-starting Chris Simpson advanced six positions and finished fifth. ... Dustin Sorensen overcame a deck-height violation after time trials and finished seventh aboard the Jimmy Mars-owned MB Customs Chassis. ... Mason Oberkramer retired on lap 39 while running fourth. ... Ryan Unzicker and Bob Gardner collided on lap 38, ending their nights. … Friday's Slocum 50 feature pays tribute to Brent Slocum, a 28-year-old track champion who died as a result of a pit accident at 34 Raceway on June 11, 2005. Four cautions slowed the 29-minute race with 11 drivers completing 50 laps. ... Originally scheduled for Friday, the $5,000-to-win Prelude to the Slocum is set to be held Saturday if weather will allow.
On the move: Ryan Gustin of Marshalltown, Iowa, started 16th and finished third.
Winner's sponsors: Babb’s Longhorn Chassis is powered by a Vic Hill Racing Engine and sponsored by Petroff Towing, Donley Trucking, Dyna-Gro Seed, Getty Landscaping, Douglas Dodge/Ram, CJI Piping & Fabrication, Hunting for Hope, Penske Racing Shocks, VP Race Fuels and Kuebler Ultra Oil.
