Ricky Thornton Jr. heads for his fourth Lucas Oil Series victory of 2023.
What won the race: Pole-starting Ricky Thornton Jr. of Chandler, Ariz., overtook early leader and fellow front-row starter Mason Zeigler on the 11th lap Friday at 300 Raceway and went on to his series-leading fourth Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series victory of the season. Thornton took the checkers 3.514 seconds ahead of two-time and reigning tour champ Tim McCreadie.
Quotable: "I didn't hot lap very good, but we qualified really good," Thornton said. "So it makes your night way easier to start up front of those heat races and in front of the feature. It’s a lot better than starting 20th and working my butt off to get to fifth or sixth."
Key notes: Thornton, who pulled away in the final laps, has eight career Lucas Oil victories. ... Runner-up Tim McCreadie, who drew within a second of Thornton in the late stages, fell shy of winning his first series race since last October. ... Series points leader Hudson O'Neal ran as high as third but got too high in turns one and two on a lap-18 restart and fought back to grab the final podium finish. ... Zeigler's fourth-place finish was his first top-five in Lucas Oil Series competition since he was third on May 27, 2020, at Florida's East Bay Raceway Park. ... Jonathan Davenport had a flat tire during a lap-17 caution period. ... Four cautions slowed the action. ... A lap-17 yellow appeared when Kody Evans stopped on the frontstretch and was towed to the pits. ... Another caution appeared on lap 18 for Joel Callahan's turn-four spin. ... Spencer Hughes drew a lap-19 yellow flag with a flat left-rear tire. ... The fourth caution appeared on lap 32 when Max Blair's right-rear tire blew. ... The series made its seventh stop at the Farley oval.
On the move: Brandon Overton of Evans, Ga., started 20th and finished eighth.
Winner's sponsors: Thornton’s SSI Motorsports Longhorn Chassis is powered by a Clements engine and sponsored by Dyno One, Hoker Trucking, Certified Inspection Service, High Performance Lubricants, Big River Steel, Van Meter Insurance Group, Murty Farms, D&E Outside Services, West Side Tractor Sales, Bilstein Shocks, FK Rod Ends, Allstar Performance, Barnes Pumps, Performance Bodies, Winters Performance, Strange Oval, Accu-Force, Quickcar, Sunoco Race Fuels and Sub-Surface of Indiana.
