Nick Hoffman heads to victory in Saturday's Jim Dunn Memorial at Muskingum County.
What won the race: Sliding ahead of early leader Brian Shirley after he tangled with a lapped car, second-starting Nick Hoffman of Mooresville, N.C., rolled on to the $10,000 XR Workin’ Man Series victory in Saturday’s 41st annual Jim Dunn Memorial at Muskingum County Speedway. The open wheel modified ace in his first season of full-time Dirt Late Model action beat Tyler Carpenter and Jacob Hawkins to the finish line in the 50-lap feature.
Quotable: "Once I showed (Shirley) a nose he got aggressive there in lapped traffic and that’s ultimately what won the race, but our race car was good all night," Hoffman said. "I lost to him in that dash deal and I knew I was gonna be pretty good for this 50 laps. I got a little tight there at the end and was able to manage."
Key notes: Hoffman fended off a late charge from Carpenter after a number of cautions slowed the 50-lapper, giving him his first checkered flag driving for Ohio resident Tye Twarog. … Shirley rebounded to finish seventh after pitting on lap 40 to replace his left-rear tire shortly after he lost the lead lead when he slip up the track in turns one and two due to contact while lapping Todd Cooney. … With the World of Outlaws Case Late Model Series event at Port Royal (Pa.) Speedway falling to wet weather, Hoffman and Shirley were among series regulars to make the last-minute haul to Muskingum County. Others were Gordy Gundaker (finished fourth), Kyle Bronson (sixth) and Cooney (16th). ... Gregg Satterlee, who finished fifth, was another driver who altered his Saturday plans to race at Muskingum County after Port Royal's program was called off around noon. ... The XR Workin' Man Series runs its next race at Legit Speedway Park on Monday for the $10,000-to-win Manic Monday.
On the move: Mike Benedum of Salem, W.Va., started 22nd and finished 10th.
Winner's sponsors: Hoffman's Tye Twarog Racing Longhorn Chassis is powered by Clements Racing Engines and carries sponsorship from NOS Energy Drink, C&W Trucking, Petroff Towing, Bilstein Shocks, and Allgaier Performance Parts.
