Ricky Thornton Jr. led the final 11 laps of Friday’s main event at WVMS.
What won the race: Making a third-to-first move on the 20th lap, pole-starting Ricky Thornton Jr. went around Jimmy Owens in turn two then under race-long leader Daulton Wilson in turn three and raced to a 30-lap victory in West Virginia Motor Speedway’s Historic 100 prelim. Thornton earned $10,000 for his series-leading sixth victory of the season, finishing 2.047 seconds ahead of Tim McCreadie.
Quotable: "I felt bad for Daulton there. He really didn't know where he needed to go to get by (the slower car of) Ross (Robinson). ... Jimmy turned to the bottom and I figured I'd kinda Hail Mary and hopefully it stuck — and it did," Thornton said. "I slid Daulton (in turn three). I don't know, I got back in front of him, but it wasn't the cleanest slider. I'm sure Daulton will owe me one."
Key notes: Ricky Thornton Jr., winning his first career WVMS feature, started on the pole but ran third the first 19 laps. ... Daulton Wilson led the first 19 laps, keeping Jimmy Owens in check until Thornton's winning move as the leaders dealt with the slower car of Ross Robinson. "I guess you've gotta lose 'em before you win 'em," Wilson said after the race. ... Runner-up Tim McCreadie mentioned the dusty, choppy conditions on the big track. "It's pretty sketchy out there," he said. ... The lone yellow flag of the night in Late Model competition came on the 23rd lap of the main event when Earl Pearson Jr. slowed in turn three. … Home-state racer Tyler Evans made his first Lucas Oil Series start and finished 12th. ... Friday's action served as a precursor for Saturday’s 50-lap, $50,000-to-win finale. … The Lucas Oil action is the lone Super Late Model racing of the season at the 5/8-mile oval.
On the move: Brandon Overton of Evans, Ga., started 10th and finished seventh.
