Rain postpones $50,000 finale at WVMS

Key notes: Rain that threatened Saturday’s event throughout the evenint hit the 5/8-mile oval just after 10 p.m. and forced the postponement of the $50,000-to-win main event. ... The decision was made shortly before midnight after WVMS promoter Cody Watson met with Lucas Oil Series director Rick Schwallie and competing drivers, but track and series officials did not immediately anounce a makeup date for the feature. ... Officials were explicit the race won't be rescheduled for Sunday so teams can prepare for next weekend's Dream at Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio. ... Lucas Oil Series officials had told teams before the rain struck that the scheduled 50-lap feature would be shortened to 30 laps due to concerns over dusty track conditions. ... Ricky Thornton Jr. of Chandler, Ariz., who captured Friday’s $10,000 preliminary feature, was set to start on the pole position of the A-main after setting fast time and winning the first heat. ... Jimmy Owens relinquished the lead on lap two of the third heat due to a broken ring and pinion. ... Hudson O'Neal's Rocket Chassis house car sustained right-side body and suspension damage when he slapped the wall in turns three and four while getting up to speed during qualifying; he didn't log a timed lap but came back to finish fourth in Heat 1 after his crew made repairs. ... Thunderstorms threatened the track following hot laps — after which drivers complained of excessively dusty conditions — but rain never hit and track officials watered the surface for another round of practice. Time trials finally began at 8:30 p.m.
