Austin Neely enjoys victory lane at Volunteer Speedway in Bulls Gap, Tenn.
What won the race: Fifth-starting Austin Neely of Tazewell, Tenn., took the lead on a lap-four restart and never looked back, cruising to a $5,000 victory in Saturday's rain-postponed Bulls Gap Bash 40 at Volunteer Speedway. Two weeks removed from earning his first career Steel Block Bandits victory at Wythe Raceway, Neely paced the final 37 circuits to secure his first career Southern All Star triumph.
Key notes: Neely became the fourth first-time Southern All Star winner this year, joining Billy Franklin, Dillon Tidmore and Josh Rice. ... Sixth-starting Ricky Weiss moved into the runner-up position on a lap-six restart and trailed Neely the rest of the way, finishing 1.484 seconds back. ... Jensen Ford was one of two competitors (Joe Bray the other) who wasn't entered when this event began on June 3; he advanced 14 positions and finished third. ... Brent Cornette gained seven spots and finished fourth. ... Series points leader Caleb Gay moved forward five positions and finished fifth. ... Joe Bray started 18th and finished sixth. ... Polesitter Rusty Ballenger failed to lead a lap and pulled off while running second on lap four; he returned to the race 11 laps later and took advantage of high attrition to finish seventh. ... Second-starting Mack McCarter led the first three laps before being overtaken by Neely and ultimately pulled off while running third on lap six. ... Four drivers who originally competed on June 3 didn't return: Brad Dyer, Jeff Smith, Brent Vosbergen and Kaede Loudy. ... The fifth-ever Southern All Star feature at Volunteer and first since 2015 was slowed by six cautions and lasted 35 minutes, with four drivers completing all 40 laps (seven were running at the finish). ... Weiss won the Crate Late Model feature.
On the move: Jensen Ford of Johnson City, Tenn., started 17th and finished third.
