Pat Doar (11) races inside of Darrell Nelson (44) en route to winning his 300th career feature.
What won the race: Pole-starting Pat Doar of New Richmond, Wis., led all 40 laps at KRA Speedway, winning Thursday's $2,000 Structural Buildings WISSOTA Challenge Series feature, the opener of the four-race Troy Benson Tribute Tour. Doar collected his 300th career victory and extended his lead as the tour's all-time winner with his earning the 38th victory.
Quotable: “It’s pretty cool. I don’t know, it just means I’ve been doing it too long, I guess,” Doar said. “It’s pretty cool, Darrell (Nelson) has been running really good, shoutout to (Nelson’s wife) Missy at home or wherever she is, at the hospital or home, you need some more ice cream. To beat Darrell, I just had the preferred line on the start and I just really don’t like the bottom of the racetrack, I’m not used to it, but I gotta run the bottom and don’t screw up.”
Key notes: Doar has secured victories in both career starts now at KRA Speedway, with his first coming in 1996. ... He notched his fourth victory of 2023. ... Darrell Nelson regained the runner-up position on a lap-13 restart and remained within striking distance of Doar in the closing laps, finishing 0.892 of a second back. Nelson was competing while wife Missy was recovering in the hospital after she seriously injured a leg while helping their son Cade unload his race car from the trailer. "She made us come here and she just pushes, always pushes me," Nelson said. "And I just want to thank all the people that did pray for her and things are going good and I just thank you all for being here tonight. ... Sam Mars ran as high as second in the early laps, before settling for third. ... Ryan Mikkelson and Don Shaw each advanced three positions, finishing fourth and fifth. ... Dave Mass and Bryce Sward gained two spots apiece, finishing seventh and eighth. ... Apparent fourth-place finisher Jake Redetzke was relegated to finishing 19th after being disqualified in postrace technical inspection. ... Dustin Johanneck scratched for the night after getting into the wall in time trials. ... Thursday's feature was slowed by five cautions and lasted 31 minutes, with nine drivers completing 40 laps.
On the move: Ryan Mikkelson of Alexandria, Minn., started seventh and finished fourth.
Winner's sponsors: Doar’s Rocket Chassis is powered by a Vic Hill Racing Engine and carries sponsorship from Tri Star Engines and Transmissions, Kivi Brothers Trucking, Polar Industries and Speedwerx Performance Exhaust.
