What won the race: Determining the race official after eight of 25 laps were completed, Kip Hughes of Enid, Okla., was declared the winner of Saturday's rain-shortened $4,000 fifth annual Dave Garmann Memorial at Dodge City Raceway Park. Following his $1,000 victory in Friday's weekend opener, Hughes earned his second career High Plains Late Model Series victory en route to sweeping the Garmann Memorial weekend, collecting more than $5,000 in race winnings.
Key notes: Polesitter Hughes led all eight laps before heavy rain hit the Dodge City, Kan., oval; with some teams traveling more than 600 miles to compete, series officials decided the best option was to declare the race official. ... Third-starting Dusty Leonard moved into the runner-up position on lap three, but never trailed Hughes by less than one second before rain halted the race. ... Lyndon Bolt advanced three positions and finished fourth. ... Before weather moved in, sixth-running Mike Jensen was forced high at the entrance of turn three, nosing his car hard into the pit entrance wall opening, necessitating a red flag for cleanup; it was during this red flag that the skies opened up and cars were called off the track. ... Justin Bussell gained three spots and finished eighth. ... The two-day event is the highest-paying series race this season and honors Dave Garmann, the two-time Colorado Late Model Association champion who died in 2019. … Saturday's feature was slowed by three incidents, including the red flag for Jensen and declared official after 75 minutes of live-scoring elapsed, with 22 drivers completing all eight laps.
On the move: Scott Cimfl of Westminster, Colo., started 15th and finished 10th.
Winner's sponsors: Hughes’ Rocket Chassis carries sponsorship from Write Walls, National Solutions, Dollar Trucking, Hot Shot Power Washing, Grand Garage Automotive & Towing, Mac Tools, TJR Motorsports and Bloodline Grafix.
