R.J. Conley (right) won Portsmouth’s race honoring Hall of Fame driver Charlie Swartz (left).
What won the race: Sizzling R.J. Conley of Wheelersburg, Ohio, took advantage when race-long leader Adam Stricker got held up in lapped traffic on lap 19, allowing Conley to use an inside move to take the lead out of turn two and never look back in Saturday's third annual Charlie Swartz Classic at Portsmouth. Stretching a personal winning streak to four in a row, three at Portsmouth, Conley paced the final 12 circuits to earn $5,000.
Quotable: “Yeah there was a lot of good cars here tonight, track had some character,” Conley said. “Turns one and two had some little ruts in it and man it was really tough on us, but the car is working great. That’s four in-a-row we’ve won and we’re really proud about it. Everyone is working hard, we’ve really got something figured out and if we can just keep it going, we should have a good year. You know, I watched Charlie (Swartz) when I was a kid, I watched (him) every weekend, him and Dad (Delmas Conley) bang it out and it’s an honor for me to win Charlie’s race. Charlie was a friend of mine, Charlie was a good man, we’re just glad we won it.”
Key notes: Pole-starting Stricker, of Batavia, Ohio, led the first 18 laps before being overtaken by Conley and finished 2.406 seconds back. ... Kirk Phillips and Kevin Wagner each advanced three positions, finishing third and fifth. ... Avery Taylor gained five spots and finished fourth. ... The third- and fourth-running cars of Dustin Linville and Jacob Hawkins were eliminated in a lap-19 accident when Mike Sark spun at the exit of turn two and sat broadside to oncoming traffic; Linville and Hawkins had nowhere to go, each making heavy contact with Sark's stalled vehicle, ending their nights. ... The event honors Charlie Swartz, a National Dirt Late Model Hall of Famer and winner of the World 100 among other major events. … Swartz's son Audie finished 11th, while his grandson Lucas Crooks finished 13th in the feature; Crooks, his car donning a throwback scheme honoring Charlie, was the last car on the lead lap in the closing circuits and ran just ahead of R.J. Conley, whose car honors his late father, Delmas. It was noted what a memorable and iconic scene it produced, seeing those two paint schemes running nose-to-tail in the closing laps of Saturday's main event; the race was slowed by two cautions and lasted 16 minutes, with 13 drivers completing all 30 laps. ... Brandon Fouts scratched for the evening after his car sustained a fire in hot laps while Darren Kattine and Russel Throckmorton scratched following their heat races; Justin Cooper also experienced a fire under the hood during warmup laps and he was unable to take the green. ... Portsmouth hosts the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series for a $15,000-to-win show Sept. 2.
On the move: Kevin Terry of Catlettsburg, Ky., started 17th and finished eighth.
