Josh Rice celebrates in Lake Cumberland’s victory lane.
What won the race: Josh Rice of Verona, Ky., took the point with an inside move out of turn four when race-long leader Michael Chilton became mired in lapped traffic; Rice led the final 29 laps and cruised to win Saturday's $7,500 fourth annual Hall of Fame 40 feature at Lake Cumberland Speedway. Rice recorded his third Valvoline Iron-Man Series victory of this season and the ninth of his career; it's Rice's fourth overall win of the season and his second at Lake Cumberland, after topping May's Johnny Wheeler Memorial event there and collecting $7,531.
Quotable: “Yeah (the car) was really good, we got in the fence down there out of two one time, just sucks man,” an emotional Rice said. “I stuffed it in the fence down there and thought I knocked the front end out of it. Luckily we gathered it together and some of these (lapped cars) are windshield wipers, like somebody said. I wheelhopped the heck out of the (No.O 7 car getting into (turn) three down there and I thought I gave it away. We lost a really good sponsor, it’s just crazy. Eric Meade, he was a really good dude and he helped us out a lot. He was a great friend, this one’s for him.”
Key notes: Overcome with emotion in victory lane, Rice dedicated Saturday's win to the late Eric Meade, owner of Map It Right Engineering & Land Surveying and longtime sponsor of Rice Brothers Racing; Meade unexpectedly passed away on Friday at the age of 43. ... Reigning series champion Michael Chilton led the first 11 laps from the outside front row before being overtaken by Rice and finishing 2.818 seconds back. ... Opting to leave Smoky Mountain Speedway after competing there Friday, Ricky Weiss advanced two positions and finished third. ...Will Roland and Stormy Scott also departed Smoky Mountain and each gained one spot, finishing fifth and seventh. ... Saturday's Hall of Fame event honored the 2023 Lake Cumberland Speedway inductees: Tommy Hargis, Tim Taylor, Carlos Morrow, Doug Smith, Danny Sumpter, Jimmy Cundiff, Estill Baker and Chubby Baird; the feature was completed without incident and lasted 10 minutes, with only five drivers completing all 40 laps after the torrid pace set by Josh Rice.
On the move: Josh Dietz of Hebron, Ky., started 12th and finished ninth.
Winner's sponsors: Rice’s Rick Jones-owned Rocket Chassis is sponsored by Sunesis Holdings & Construction, BLOX Spiked Ice, Extreme Sportswear, Map It Right Engineering & Land Surveying, Chain Locker USA, Maxwell Trucking, AirMax Heating and Cooling, ATC Bolts & Fasteners LLC, Northern Kentucky Equipment, Bazell Race Fuels, Integra Shocks, Accu-Force Dynos & Testers, STAKT Products, TopSide Marketing and Slicker Graphics.
Points chase: After Lake Cumberland (Southern Series): 1. Josh Rice (240); 2. Adam Ahl (204); 3. Michael Chilton (181); 4. Camaron Marlar (180); 5. Jensen Ford (173). (Northern Series): 1. Josh Rice (240); 2. Michael Chilton (181); 3. Camaron Marlar (180); 4. Adam Ahl (151); 5. Zack Dohm (140).
