Bobby Pierce in victory lane at 81 Speedway on Friday.
What won the race: Fast qualifier and pole-starting Bobby Pierce of Oakwood, Ill., captured Friday's second World of Outlaws Case Late Model Series preliminary victory in 81 Speedway's Wichita Late Model Showdown. Pierce earned a $4,000 payday ahead of second-starting Tanner English, who led the opening five laps.x
Quotable: "I figured if I could run the bottom and get the lead on the bottom, it'd be better than the top," Pierce said. "Tanner was running the top at the time (I took the lead on lap six) and I got the lead on the bottom. I felt pretty good down there, really. I didn't want to run the top unless I had to. I guess really toward the end of the race, the track got racy and moved around ... and we had to get back up on top."
Key notes: Bobby Pierce of Oakwood, Ill., and Nick Hoffman of Mooresville, N.C., will start from the front row of Saturday’s third heat while Tanner English of Benton, Ky., and Dennis Erb Jr. of Carpentersville, Ill., will lead the fourth heat to green. … Pierce has now won in his only two starts at the 3/8-mile, adding to last April’s MLRA victory at the oval outside Wichita, Kan. … Eleventh-starting Jacob Magee of Caney, Kan., was up to seventh when a flat right-rear tire on lap 23 curbed his march forward; he managed to finish 11th. … Two cautions (lap four for Dustin Walker and Delbert Smith tangling and lap 23 for Magee) slowed the second semi feature that lasted 20 minutes. … Fourteen of 18 starters finished on the lead lap. … Rayce McCord of Molt, Mont., did not take the green. … The World of Outlaws CASE Late Model Series kicked off the inaugural World of Outlaws Heartland Speedweek with a pair of 25-lap split-field preliminary features paying $4,000-to-win each at 81 Speedway. … The weekend wraps up with a stop at Off Road Speedway in Norfolk, Neb., on Sunday, the tour’s first trip to the Cornhusker State since visiting Boone County Speedway in Albion on July 21, 2008. … The tripleheader weekend begins a stretch of seven races in nine days for WoO competitors.
On the move: Daniel Hilsabeck of Earlham, Iowa, started 12th and finished ninth.
