Kyle Peterlin stands in victory lane after winning $2,000 at his home track.
What won the race: Muscling past race-long leader Jeff Massingill with an inside move exiting turn four, Kyle Peterlin led the final 12 laps Tuesday at Hibbing Raceway for a $2,000 XR Northern Storm victory at his hometown track. The reigning track champion notched his third career Structural Buildings WISSOTA Challenge Series victory, beating Massingill to the checkers by 1.401 seconds in the caution-free 40-lapper.
Quotable: “It feels good, especially to win (at my) home track,” Peterlin said. “I can’t say enough about the guys that help me on my team. This is our best track, so winning here, it’s a bonus because it’s in front of your home crowd, but I almost expect it because I run really good here.”
Key notes: Third-starting Jeff Massingill of Keewatin, Minn., made contact with polesitter Derek Vesel to take the lead on the opening lap and paced the field until being overtaken by Peterlin; Vesel sustained left front damage and never contended, finishing 13th. ... Sixth-starting Skeeter Estey moved into third on lap 39 and finished third. ... Second-starting Zach Wohlers remained committed to the high line, finishing fourth. ... Jake Redetzke moved into fifth on lap 29 and rounded out the top-five. ... Sam Mars advanced four positions and finished eighth. ... Dustin Sorensen started 15th and finished 10th aboard the Jimmy Mars-owned MB Customs house car. ... The winner of Monday's Northern Storm opener at Ogilvie Raceway, series points leader Pat Doar, finished 15th after lowering the track record in time trials. ... Tuesday's green-to-checkered feature was completed without incident and lasted just 10 minutes, with 17 drivers completing 40 laps; 22 were running at the finish. … WISSOTA Challenge Series competitors return to Hibbing for two $3,000-to-win shows on Sept. 2-3.
On the move: Jake Redetzke of Eau Claire, Wis., started 11th and finished fifth.
