Roscoe Smith (left) congratulates Ashton Winger in victory lane.
What won the race: Fresh off his DIRTcar Summer Nationals championship, Ashton Winger of Senoia, Ga., continued his recent success in switching to the Schaeffer's Southern Nationals with a flag-to-flag victory to earn $7,544 at Senoia Raceway. He outdueled fellow front-row starter Carson Ferguson, winning by a 1.056-margin after a tight early battle while 18th-starting Michael Page of Douglasville, Ga., roared forward for a podium finish.
Quotable: “I thought we were pretty good here for a long time, but then Ricky (Thornton Jr.) and Jimmy (Owens) and a couple of other guys came in and took the dang keys from me,” Winger said. "We've still got some work to do to be better."
Key notes: Winger won for the first time on the Southern Nationals circuit; he's the 39th driver to win a series event. ... He's the third driver to win a Summer Nationals and Southern Nationals race (joining Mike Marlar and Scott Bloomquist) and the first to do it in the same season (he won six Summer Nationals races en route to the title on the Midwestern circuit). ... Stormy Scott ran third most of the way but slipped to seventh at the finish after a late scrape with Michael Page. ... Four cautions slowed the 44-lap feature, including when Tyler Millwood lost a top-five run when he got into the turn-four wall with five laps remaining. ... Garrett Smith spun with two laps remaining for the final caution. ... The initial yellow flag was for a first-lap spin for Ricky Weiss and the second came on the 36th lap when Jimmy Owens had a flat tire. ... The Roscoe Smith Classic pays tribute to the father of Clint Smith, the retired racer and now Senoia's race director. ... Thursday's feature lasted 24 minutes, with 13 drivers completing all 44 laps.
On the move: Michael Page of Douglasville, Ga., started 18th and finished third.
Winner's sponsors: Winger’s Jeff Mathews Motorsports Rocket Chassis is powered by an Andy Durham Racing Engine and carries sponsorship from Johnny Doan Plumbing, RV Select Inc., Keyser Manufacturing, Integra Shocks, Angry Elephant Tattoo and Piercing, FK Rod Ends, Super K Express, Hoosier Tire, Simpson Race Products, Collins Signs, DirtCarLift.com, VP Race Fuels, Boswell Oil and WrapTeck.
