Bobby Pierce takes the checkers in Thursday's first 25-lap semifeature.
What won the race: Taking the lead with a slider entering turn-three, second-starting Bobby Pierce of Oakwood, Ill., led the final 13 laps to win Thursday's first $5,000 semifeature at Florence Speedway on the Lucas Oil Late Model Series. Pierce secured his fifth overall win of August in Thursday's preliminary event for Saturday's 41st annual Sunoco North-South 100 presented by Lucas Oil.
Quotable: “Not too much (concern over Ryan Gustin), but I didn’t know how good he was,” Pierce said. “I know (Gustin) started sixth, so he had to come through the field a little bit there. The track got very smooth and I had a really consistent line there that I liked. With it just being a green-and-white together, just one lap, not as nerve-wracking as a green-white-checkered, so just one lap I had to hit my marks.”
Key notes: Sixth-starting Ryan Gustin moved into the runner-up position on a lap-14 restart and finished 0.859 of a second back. ... Seventh-starting Josh Rice took advantage of a lap-24 restart and moved into third. ... Eyeing his first career Lucas Oil Series podium finish, Matt Cosner settled for fourth. ... Twelfth-starting Cory Hedgecock finished fifth. ... Jimmy Owens advanced 11 positions and finished eighth. ... Michael Chilton led the first 12 laps from the pole before fading to finish ninth. ... Max Blair gained 12 spots and finished 10th. ... Nick Hoffman drew two of the race's three cautions after losing his air cleaner while running third on lap two; Hoffman elected to continue without the filter before hitting the turn-four wall and causing heavy right front damage while running 10th on the final lap; he was the only driver unable to complete all 25 laps. ... Thursday's first semifeature was slowed by a third caution (for debris on lap 13) and lasted 16 minutes, with 23 competitors running at the finish.
On the move: Chris Ferguson of Mount Holly, N.C., started 18th and finished sixth.
Winner's sponsors: Pierce’s Longhorn Chassis is sponsored by Hoker Trucking, Mesilla Valley Transportation, Cajun Pools & Spas, Bloomington Normal Truck Performance, Carnaghi Towing & Repair, Floyd’s Waste Systems, Vic Hill Race Engines, Swift Springs, Bilstein Shocks, Toyota of Danville, Ted Brown’s Quality Paint and Body Shop, Extreme Electric, Fast1 Speed Shop, Performance Bodies, A Plus Vacuum, Lekg Tree Service, Bert Transmission by Budda, Velocita-USA, Robert and Sons Aluminum, VP Racing Fuels and FK Rod Ends.
