Bryan Mullins earned $20,000 for his All-Stars victory at Cherokee.
What won the race: Electing to change tires under the mandatory fuel stop on lap 42, 12th-starting Bryan Mullis of Rock Hill, S.C., steadily marched through the field and took the lead on a lap-64 restart before pacing the final 37 circuits to win Sunday's rain-postponed $20,000 Summer South Sizzler. Mullis notched his first career American All-Star Series presented by PPM victory and the richest payday of his career.
Quotable: “Hell I was just riding out there,” Mullis said. “At that (lap-42) break, I knew I had probably like two or three laps left on the right-rear (tire) at least, so I knew I had to come in as soon as we get a caution. Hell, I hate riding around on the bottom for 100 laps, so I had to go do something different and switch it up. I went to the top and it stuck, the track was awesome.”
Key notes: Following a similar pit strategy as Mullis, 18th-starting Derrick Ramey moved into the runner-up position on lap 87 and finished 2.264 seconds back. ... Pole-starting Carson Ferguson led 62 of the first 63 laps before being overtaken by Mullis and Ramey in the closing stages and drawing the final caution with a flat right rear on lap 90; Ferguson finished 14th after pitting for fresh rubber. ... Choosing not to change tires on the lap-42 fuel stop, 19th-starting Chip Brindle stretched his tires to finish third. ... Making a rare Crate Late Model start, 15th-starting Zack Mitchell finished fourth after taking the spot on a lap-91 restart. ... Series points leader Jesse Lowe also took advantage of the lap-91 restart and completed the top five. ... Josh Dietz stretched his rubber the entire distance and advanced 14 positions to finish sixth. ... After pitting from second and third on a lap-63 caution, John Ruggiero Jr. and Luke Cooper settled for seventh and eighth. ... Logan Walls gained 16 spots and finished ninth. ... Jacob Brown led lap 13 and ran in the top-three for the first half, before pitting with Ferguson on lap 90 and elected not to continue. ... Dillon Brown suffered his second flat right-rear while running fifth on lap 86 and pulled off. ... A spin on a lap-35 restart attempt eliminated Travis and Jeremy Steele while battling for fifth. ... Mark Whitener drew the race's first caution when he spun on lap 33 with a flat right rear following contact with Sylvan Schuette; Whitener was disqualified after making contact with one of Schuette's crew members in the pits. ... Slowed by 12 incidents, including a 20-minute fuel stop, Sunday's 100-lap feature lasted more than 90 minutes with 16 drivers completing the distance and 17 running at the finish.
On the move: Jesse Lowe of Crossville, Tenn., started 23rd and finished fifth.
Winner's sponsors: Mullis drives a Longhorn Chassis sponsored by Collins Signs, Stoney Lonesome Customs, Superior Tire Management, WP Racing Shocks and VP Racing Fuels, with a special thanks to Mom and Dad for their support.
