After a first-lap crash a night earlier, Mike Greseth rebounded at Red River Valley Speedway for an NLRA victory.
What won the race: Third-starting Mike Greseth of Harwood, N.D., used an inside move to take the lead as race-long leader Tyler Peterson became mired in lapped traffic and paced the final 17 laps to win Friday's $2,404 third annual Howie Schill Memorial at Red River Valley Speedway. Greseth earned his third Northern LateModel Racing Association victory of the season and the 14th of his career.
Quotable: “Oh this (win) definitely humbles a guy, me and (my) dad, after (crashing) last night, we slept like three hours,” Greseth said. “We worked (all night) and if it wasn’t for him, we wouldn’t be here. Shane Lasky, he answered my call last night at midnight and he allowed me to drop my car off at seven this morning to fix it and I owe it to those two.”
Key notes: Greseth spun on the first lap of Thursday's opener and was hit hard by Josh Zimpel, who did not compete in Friday's finale. ... Fourth-starting Mitch Johnson moved into the runner-up spot on lap 16 and trailed Greseth the rest of the way, finishing 1.462 seconds back. ... Fifth-starting Mike Balcaen took third on lap 23 and completed the podium. ... Pole-starting Peterson, of Hickson, N.D., led the first 13 laps before attempting multiple outside passes on lapped traffic and slipping to finish fourth. ... Brad Seng advanced three positions and finished fifth. ... After winning Thursday's $1,500 opener, Chad Becker was to pull off and call it a night. … The event honors Howie Schill of West Fargo, N.D., the first-ever Late Model track champion at River Cities Speedway in Grand Forks, N.D., and the first-ever feature winner on the NLRA tour; Schill died of a stroke on Dec. 25, 2020, at the age of 55. ... Friday's nine-minute feature was completed green-to-checkered with 19 drivers completing 30 laps and 22 running at the finish.
On the move: Brody Troftgruben of Grand Forks, N.D., started 13th and finished eighth.
Winner's sponsors: Greseth’s Rocket Chassis is sponsored by Quality Engine, Innovative Air, Morton Buildings, T&S Custom Homes, Stremick Trucking, York Furnaces, Superior Customs, Midea Ductless Air Conditioners, Schaeffer’s Oil and Shatter X.
