Chad Simpson savors a weekend sweep with the Hoker Trucking Series.
What won the race: Using an inside move entering turn one on lap 19, sixth-starting Chad Simpson of Mount Vernon, Iowa, took the point from race-long leader Charlie McKenna and led the final seven laps to win Saturday's $3,000 Hoker Trucking Series stop at West Liberty Raceway. After winning Friday's $3,000 opener at Lee County Speedway, Simpson's victory gives him the weekend sweep and his third career series triumph, all of them coming this season.
Quotable: “Yeah it is (a great feeling to win), this is home, so it’s pretty badass,” Simpson said. “None of these (wins) are easy anymore, you gotta work your butt off for every one of them and there’s a lot of good race cars in this series. There’s a lot of good guys that grew up right here in West Liberty with me, so it was fun to race with them again and definitely fun to come out on top.”
Key notes: After winning June's $3,000 series stop at West Liberty, Charlie McKenna led the first 18 laps from the pole before being overtaken by Simpson and then experiencing race-ending trouble on a lap-20 restart attempt. ... Series points leader and defending race winner Chad Holladay moved into the runner-up position on a lap-24 restart and finished 1.334 seconds behind Simpson. ... Fifth-starting Andy Eckrich finished third, his second podium finish in as many nights. ... Tenth-starting Nick Marolf also took advantage of the lap-24 restart and finished fourth. ... Chris Spieker advanced nine positions and finished sixth. ... Second-starting Matt Ryan faded to finish seventh. ... Jeff Aikey gained six spots and finished eighth. ... While battling at the back of the top 10, Derrick Stewart and Luke Goedert tangled on lap 17 and were unable to continue. ... Eighth-running Dave Eckrich pulled off on lap 16. ... Saturday's 25-lap feature was slowed by several cautions, including a lengthy delay on lap 23 and lasted 46 minutes; 13 competitors completed the entire distance and 15 were running at the finish. ... Jerry Johnson and C.J. Horn both scratched from the feature lineup.
On the move: Fred Remley of Anamosa, Iowa, started 25th and finished 10th.
