Dusty Jones heads for a $5,000 victory at East Alabama.
What won the race: Taking the point from early leader Joseph Brown with an inside move out of turn four, fourth-starting Dusty Jones of LaGrange, Ga., paced the final 23 circuits to win Sunday's $5,000 Limited Late Model portion of the National 100 at East Alabama Motor Speedway. Jones secured his second special event victory in the last five weeks at EAMS after topping September's $7,500 51st annual Alabama State Championship.
Quotable: “The track was about like normal, big hole getting (into turn three) over there, but just had to get around it, get through it, whatever you had to do,” Jones said. “I knew on lap five that if we had to go 40 (laps), I wasn't gonna make it, because I killed the tires the first five laps. When (race director) Melvin said green-white-checkered, I just held it wide open for two laps, so it all played out in our favor.”
Key notes: Sunday's feature was slowed by 12 separate incidents, including two red flags and was shortened to 26 laps (from 40) because of time limitations. ... Second-starting Joseph Brown led the first three laps before giving way to Jones and trailing him the rest of the way, finishing 1.101 seconds back. ... Seventh-starting Austin Horton took third on lap 14 and rounded-out the podium finishers. ... Rucker Orr improved two positions and finished fourth. ... Pole-starting David Whitener slowed from sixth with a flat tire to draw the race's 11th caution on lap 21; Whitener rebounded to finish ninth after changing the flat. ... Kenny Limrick gained 13 spots and completed the top 10. ... Rye Faulk spun from fourth to bring out the seventh caution on lap nine; Faulk continued but spun again on the ensuing restart attempt, collecting Randall Powell and Travis Price, before calling it a night. ... Caleb Gay was collected in Faulk's original lap-nine spin, ending his day. ... Sunday's main event lasted 52 minutes, with 15 competitors completing 26 laps.
On the move: Thomas Lewis of Hamilton, Ga., started 21st and finished sixth.
