Brandon Sheppard en route to a $5,000 victory in Monday's rain-delayed 30-lapper.
What won the race: After steadily marching through the field and taking the lead for good with an inside move by mid-race leader Brian Shirley, ninth-starting Brandon Sheppard of New Berlin, Ill., paced the final 11 circuits to win Monday's rain-delayed 30-lap feature at East Bay. Sheppard led for 12 laps (18, 20-30) en route to earning $5,000 for his 30th career full-field Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series feature victory and his 21st career Georgia-Florida Speedweeks triumph.
Quotable: “Man you just don’t know (when you’ll win next). The competition is so tough right now,” Sheppard said. “All these guys do such a good job and the racetrack is so much different every night. Hats off to everybody here at East Bay (for) giving us a great race track again tonight. Man, I hated that I had to pass my old buddy (Shirley) for the win. I know he’s needed a good run this week too.”
Key notes: Sheppard finished sixth in Thursday's $10,000-to-win third round held prior to Monday's rain-postponed 30-lapper; only two races remain in the 48th annual Wieland Winternationals. ... The fifth-starting Shirley, of Chatham, Ill., led twice for four laps (15-17, 19) before giving way to Sheppard and finishing 1.491 seconds back. ... Third-starting Devin Moran quickly moved into the lead and paced laps 3-14 before being overtaken by Shirley and Sheppard, settling for third. ... Hudson O'Neal threatened for a podium spot the entire distance, finishing fourth; he placed fifth in Thursday's $10,000-to-win 40-lapper and was the only driver to secure top-five finishes in both races. ... Ross Robinson improved six positions and finished rounded-out the top five. ... Ashton Winger overcame an opening-lap spin and finished 11th. ... Wil Herrington spun on the ensuing restart, but could only rebound to finish 13th. ... The third and final caution flew on lap 17 when Garrett Smith slowed from seventh with a flat right-rear; Smith led the opening two laps from the pole before contact with Tyler Erb pushed the quarter panel onto his tire and caused the puncture. ... There were five total lead changes between Smith, Moran, Shirley and Sheppard. ... Monday's rain-delayed feature lasted 15 minutes, with 15 drivers running at the finish.
On the move: Race winner, Brandon Sheppard of New Berlin, Ill., started ninth.
Winner's sponsors: Sheppard’s SRR Longhorn Factory Chassis was powered by an Andy Durham Racing Engine and carries sponsorship from Hoist Hydration, Mesilla Valley Transportation, Realtree, Coltman Farms Racing, Riggs Drilling Solutions, Valvoline, I-Beam Sliding Doors, University of Northwestern Ohio, Paulson Rock Products, Stussy Construction, Sheppard Auto Sales & Salvage, Go Lithium, Bilstein, VP Racing Fuels, Night Owl Design and BSheppGear.com.
Points chase: After East Bay Thursday: 1. Ricky Thornton Jr. (1,390); 2. Hudson O'Neal (1,345); 3. Jonathan Davenport (1,235); 4. Devin Moran (1,235); 5. Brandon Sheppard (1,150); 6. Jimmy Owens (1,130); 7. Tim McCreadie (1,120); 8. Daulton Wilson (1,085); 9. Kyle Bronson (1,060); 10. Clay Harris (1,050); 11. Garrett Alberson (1,035); 12. Tyler Erb (1,020).
