Pre-race notes
After Monday’s scheduled opener was called off due to heavy morning showers that saturated the third-mile oval, Tuesday has brought clear, sunny skies with a light breeze and temperatures in the high 60s. … The 75-car field is up 17 entries from last year’s 58-car turnout for the Winternationals opener. ... No provisionals are available for Tuesday’s 30-lap feature, which doesn’t offer Lucas Oil Series points. … The final Winternationals before East Bay’s closing has Tim Dohm of Cross Lanes, W.Va., back in the field after skipping last year’s meet. A feature winner in 2007, the 63-year-old Dohm has competed in all but five Winternationals since his debut in 2001, missing only in ’04 and 2012-14 in addition to last year. … Dohm is one of 13 former Winternationals winners in Tuesday’s field, joining Terry Casey, Jonathan Davenport, Dennis Erb Jr., Tyler Erb, Tim McCreadie, Devin Moran, Hudson O’Neal, Jimmy Owens, Earl Pearson Jr., Brandon Sheppard and Ashton Winger. … Winger’s car owner, Jeff Mathews of Brandon, Fla., is entered in the evening’s program. … Wheelersburg, Ohio’s Conley brothers — Rod and R.J. — are returning to East Bay action to experience the Tampa-area track one more time. The siblings last entered the Winternationals in 2005 following a decade run as familiar faces in the event’s pit area. … Ross Robinson’s wife, Amanda, will put aside her crew chief duties and climb behind the wheel for the first three programs of the week. Ross will also race alongside his wife, whose only previous action at East Bay came years ago in the mod lite division. … Among the spectators walking through the pits is Gary Stuhler of Greencastle, Pa., who registered the lone East Bay victory of his career exactly 25 years ago on Monday. His car owner that night, Dale Beitler, is also on hand after driving up from his residence in Treasure Island, Fla.
