Bobby Pierce celebrates Friday's $10,000 triumph, his eighth victory of the season.
What won the race: Powering around the outside of race-long leader Brian Shirley on lap 17, fourth-starting Bobby Pierce of Oakwood, Ill., led the remaining circuits to win Friday's 40-lap Nippy 50 opener at Maquoketa Speedway. Pierce earned $10,000 for his first career feature victory at the quarter-mile oval and notched his eighth overall Super Late Model triumph of the young season.
Quotable: “The track was great. The track prep they did was definitely needed — it made for a great race,” Pierce said. “It was a tough challenge to get to the front there. I wasn’t sure if (Brian) Shirley was gonna move up or not. I feel like the car was a lot better in the feature than it was in the heat race; we’ll probably roll (with that setup) tomorrow.”
Key notes: The pole-starting Shirley, of Chatham, Ill., led the opening 16 laps before giving way to Pierce and slipping to finish third. ... Third-starting Ryan Gustin grabbed the runner-up spot on lap 33 and trailed Pierce the final eight circuits, finishing 2.750 seconds back at his home-state track. .. Eighth-starting Garrett Alberson used a last-lap pass to secure the fourth spot. ... Tenth-starting Brandon Sheppard ran as high as third before settling for fifth. ... Cody Overton pursued Shirley in the early stages before fading to place sixth. ... Jason Feger improved three positions and finished eighth, while Chad Simpson gained four spots and placed ninth in their season debuts. ... Todd Cooney recovered to finish 14th after spinning to draw the race's third and final caution on lap 13. ... Tyler Erb slowed from fifth with a flat right-rear tire to bring out the second yellow on lap nine; he opted to pull off and call it a night. ... Brian Harris's lap-four solo spin caused the first stoppage. ... Friday's feature lasted 14 minutes, with 10 drivers completing 40 laps and 15 running at the finish.
On the move: Dylan Thornton of Orcutt, Calif., started 19th and finished 10th.
