Ashton Winger poses in victory lane after capturing Friday's Toilet Bowl Classic opener at Clarksville Speedway.
What won the race: Using an inside move to grab the lead from early pacesetter Tanner English on lap eight, second-starting Ashton Winger of Hampton, Ga., paced the remaining distance unchallenged to top Friday night’s 40-lap Tuckassee Toilet Bowl Classic opener at Clarksville Speedway. The 24-year-old driver beat surprise entrant Max Blair of Centerville, Pa., by 1.376 seconds for the $10,000 winner’s check.
Quotable: “Tanner (English) went high and at the last second I darted to the bottom and prayed that it stuck,” Winger said. “It was good racing with him, I know they were moving and shaking, I figured someone was gonna shoot by me. It’s so hard to feel comfortable here, but it’s a special win, we’ve had a really, really trying year. My car has been fast, just have not had a whole lot of stuff go our way.” Commenting on the infamous toilet trophy, “everybody knows I’m full of it, so might as well have somewhere to put it," Winger quipped.
Key notes: Making his first start since riding out a wild series of flips in qualifying on March 16 at Alabama’s Talladega Short Track, Winger registered his first Super Late Model triumph of 2024. He won two Crate Late Model features in January at Florida’s East Bay Raceway Park. … The fifth-starting Blair overtook English for second on a lap-24 restart and held the runner-up spot to the checkered flag. … English settled for a third-place finish after leading laps 1-7 driving the Hatcher Motorsports Longhorn Chassis. … Josh Rice started and finished fourth. … Six caution flags slowed the feature, including two for multi-car melees before a lap was completed. … Other cautions came for separate Brandon Tibaldi and Ronnie Cooper spins on lap seven; Parker Martin slowing after getting lapped on lap 24; and Matt Cooper spinning out of fourth place and collecting eighth-place Dennis Erb Jr. on the lap-24 restart. … The feature lasted 35 minutes with 11 drivers completing 40 laps and 12 running at the finish. … The track crew had to water the inner rim of the track to dissipate dust that low-running cars were kicking up from the infield. … Oakley Johns crashed out of the first heat and required a tow back to the pits, but he made repairs and went from 23rd to eighth in the feature. … Originally scheduled for March 8-9 before being washed out by rain, the 20th annual Toilet Bowl Classic includes $10,000-to-win events on Friday and Saturday.
On the move: Oakley Johns of Hohenwald, Tenn., started 23rd and finished eighth.
