Ricky Thornton Jr. led the final 16 laps to win Thursday's second prelim.
What won the race: Executing a textbook turn-three slider by race-long leader Nick Hoffman, pole-starting Ricky Thornton Jr. of Chandler, Ariz., paced the final 16 circuits to win Thursday's second 25-lap semifeature in North-South 100 preliminary action at Florence Speedway. Thornton's $6,000 split-field payday is his 12th overall Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series victory of the season and his first driving for Koehler Motorsports.
Quotable: “It’s huge (to win), to come out first night like we did. We had a lot of speed a couple weeks ago right out of the box and went back to the shop after that Huset’s deal and completely re-bodied it and everything else,” Thornton said. “Tore it up a little bit there, I felt like I was almost running too hard early, trying to get my tires to go … I know I was a lot harder (compound) than most of them.”
Key notes: Hoffman, of Mooresville, N.C., led the opening nine laps before fading to eighth. ... Ninth-starting Bobby Pierce used a daring turn-one slider to take second for good on lap 16 and trailed Thornton the final 10 laps, cutting his 5.187-second lead as low as 0.878 of a second as they took the white flag, only to hop the turn-one cushion and take the checkers 2.080 seconds back. ... Tim McCreadie ran as high as second at the halfway mark before slipping to fourth and eventually rebounding to third with a handful of laps to go. ... Hudson O'Neal and Kyle Bronson each improved seven positions, finishing fourth and fifth. ... Seventh-starting Cory Hedgecock climbed as high as third near halfway before slipping to sixth. ... The race's first caution came on lap 10 when Pierce threw an aggressive slide job on Jason Jameson for ninth, causing Jameson to climb the turn-two cushion and make contact with the wall, while also making slight contact with Pierce. Jameson was black-flagged after swerving and making contact with Pierce under the resulting caution. ... The second and final stoppage came on the ensuing restart when Michael Chilton hopped the turn-three cushion and made contact with the wall, slowing abruptly and sending Zak Blackwood and Blake Creech spinning. Chilton called it a night, while Creech and Blackwood both finished one lap down. ... The second 25-lapper lasted 16 minutes, with 15 drivers completing the distance.
On the move: Runner-up finisher Bobby Pierce of Oakwood, Ill., started ninth.
