Jason Feger heads for a $10,000 victory at Macon Speedway.
What won the race: Overcoming an early-race crash to muscle his way by Justin Duty for the lead on lap 94, sixth-starting Jason Feger of Bloomington, Ill., paced the final seven circuits to win Saturday's 10th annual KerbyStrong 100 at Macon Speedway. Feger pocketed $10,000 for his fourth MARS Late Model Championship Series victory of the season — the 27th of his career — and his second KerbyStrong triumph (2016).
Quotable: “Justin (Duty) did a great job there, he came and asked me for some advice (before the race), I probably gave him too much, I guess,” Feger said. “He was using the whole track there, I had to get a little rough to pass him, but he knew what he was doing. Kerby (Damery) was a great guy, I was fortunate enough to race with him (for) years when I started … it’s great to win a race in his honor.”
Key notes: Feger won his second 100-lapper of the season at Macon after topping June's $7,500 44th annual Herald & Review in DIRTcar Summer Nationals competition. ... Justin Duty, who started 14th, powered around the outside of race-long leader Tommy Sheppard Jr. on lap 62 and led until Feger snuck by on the lap-94 restart. Duty slowed a couple of laps later to draw the race's ninth and final caution before pulling off; he was credited with 10th. ... Ryan Unzicker regained the runner-up spot after Duty slowed and held off a challenge from Mike Spatola to finish 0.937 of a second behind Feger. ... Spatola settled for third; he and Feger both recovered for solid finishes after tangling to bring out the race's third stoppage on lap 17. ... Sheppard, of Berlin, Ill., led the opening 61 laps from the pole before fading to fourth. ... Timmy Dick trailed Sheppard for the majority of the first half before slipping as low as 11th and recovering to finish eighth. ... Jake Little battled Dick for second in the early going before Dick over-rotated in turn one on lap 47, collecting Little and causing him to spin. Bob Gardner had nowhere to go, slamming into Little and ending his night, while Kye Blight spun to avoid. Little rebounded to fourth by lap 80 before slowing and pulling off a few laps later. ... The event honored Kerby Damery, of Macon, Ill., a former Macon track champion who fought appendix cancer before dying on Feb. 8, 2015, at the age of 49. The KerbyStrong Foundation was opened in Damery’s memory and raises money for the Decatur Memorial Foundation, supporting Macon County locals. Damery’s son, Blake, retired on lap 19. ... The race's biggest incident came on the opening lap when Greg Kimmons flipped in turn three, landing on his roof. Kimmons was uninjured, but it took track officials 10 minutes for cleanup. ... The feature lasted 45 minutes, with nine drivers completing 100 laps. ... McKay Wenger pulled off in his heat race and scratched for the night.
On the move: Allen Weisser of Peoria, Ill., started 13th and finished fifth.
