Bobby Pierce (32) kept Brian Shirley (3s) in check at Atomic.
What won the race: Ending Brian Shirley's three-race winning streak, polesitter Bobby Pierce led all 40 laps Friday at Atomic Speedway to earn $10,000 and his 12th full-field World of Outlaws Case Late Model Series victory of the season. Shirley started alongside Pierce and challenged several times early but settled for the runner-up spot, 1.559 seconds behind at the checkers. Ryan Gustin took third from Nick Hoffman on the last lap.
Quotable: "It was tough. If it wasn't for the luck in the heat race we had, I don't think we would have got it done tonight," said Pierce, who narrowly avoided a wreck in his heat and won the prelim when Brandon Sheppard had a flat tire. "Hopefully this year we can win on both nights and kind of sweep the weekend. But it's gonna be tough. These guys are really good and we'll see what we got."
Key notes: Pierce notched his 30th career WoO victory and 30th overall victory of the season. ... Ilinois drivers have won 12 of the last 13 WoO events. ... Pierce caught a break in winning the fourth heat where he narrowly avoided a first-lap crash then inherited the lead when Brandon Sheppard shredded a right-rear tire. ... In the 40-lap feature, six cautions slowed the action, the last one on lap 38 for Tyler Erb's retirement. ... Erb was also involved in the previous caution on lap 32 as Cade Dillard slowed with a flat after climbing the turn-four wall in a tussle with Erb two laps earlier (Dillard walked to the track's edge to show Erb his displeasure). ... Spencer Hughes slowed on lap 29 (Tristan Chamberlain's engine overheated under caution). ... A lap-15 yellow appeared when Rod Conley and Seth Daniels tangled entering turn one. .... Jared Hawkins stopped for a lap-nine yellow (Freddie Carpenter retired during the slowdown). ... The first start was called back for a turn-three pileup when Rod Conley went around in a mess collecting Dustin Sorensen, Seth Daniels, Dustin Walker and Michael LeFevers. ... Tyler Carpenter, a 21-race winner this season, scratched from the feature. ... Saturday’s $15,000-to-win Fireball 50 at Atomic wraps up the doubleheader.
On the move: Series points leader Brandon Sheppard of New Berlin, Ill., started 16th and finished sixth.
