Brett Swedberg won the Wildman Watson Classic at Plymouth.
What won the race: Moving race-long leader Brad Mueller out of the groove as they powered out of turn four to the checkers, second-starting Brett Swedberg of Shawano, Wis., captured Saturday's $2,000 seventh annual Wildman Watson Classic at Plymouth Dirt Track. Swedberg secured his second Wabam Dirt Kings Tour victory of the season and the third of his career. Joel Bennett finished second while Nick Anvelink's third-place finish secured the series championship.
Key notes: Pole-starting Brad Mueller led until the final corner as Swedberg nudged him out of the groove while they tried to put a lap on Joe Bongiorno. Mueller gassed it in an attempt to beat Swedberg back to the checkers and pushed wide, slamming the outside wall just before the finish line and coasting across in fourth. ... Joel Bennett and Nick Anvelink snuck by Mueller's wounded machine before crossing the line. ... Anvelink clinched his seventh career Dirt Kings Tour title and fourth in a row (2017-'19, '21-'24). ... Justin Ritchie of New London, Wis., is the tour's only other champion (2020). Ritchie gained three spots and finished 10th. ... Taylor Scheffler chased Mueller for the opening eight laps before being overtaken by Swedberg and eventually slipping to fifth. ... The race's lone caution flew on lap 11 when Tim Rothe slowed from 15th and required a push back to the pits. ... Mike Mullen pulled off on the second lap. ... The event honored Jim “Wildman” Watson of Greenfield, Wis., the legendary Dirt Late Model driver who cut his teeth at the old Hales Corners Speedway in Franklin, Wis.; Watson had an extensive career as a NASCAR crewman before dying from a heart attack on Oct. 21, 2017, at the age of 55. ... The 30-lapper was moved ahead because of fear of impending weather and lasted 10 minutes, with 13 starters completing the distance.
On the move: Lukas Postl of Shawano, Wis., started 11th and finished sixth.
