What won the race: For the second consecutive night, Cory Hedgecock of Loudon, Tenn., led every lap of Rogers-Dabbs Crate Racin' USA 604 Series action at Talladega Short Track, winning Saturday's 60-lap Red Farmer Tribute finale. Hedgecock's 23rd career Crate Racin' USA Series victory was worth $6,000, boosting his total winnings to more than $9,700 on the weekend.
Quotable: “Man I don’t know (what makes me so good here) … my dad, all my crew and all my great sponsors,” Hedgecock said. “Man, everything is clicking right now. Finally got the monkey off our back, hopefully he’s gone, moved home, gone wherever the hell he went. (We) got some wins this weekend and hopefully carry momentum over into the winter.”
Key notes: Hedgecock collected his second straight sweep of the Red Farmer Tribute after winning both races last year to earn $9,700. ... Hedgecock has now won five straight CRUSA events at Talladega, going back to last June's $10,000 Golden Hornet 50, earning nearly $30,000 there over that span. ... Michael Page of Douglasville, Ga., was the last driver not named Hedgecock to win a Crate Racin' USA Series event there in 2022's Red Farmer Tribute finale, more than 735 days ago. ... Hedgecock pressured Zack Mitchell in the closing laps before settling for runner-up in the night's earlier Hunt the Front Super Dirt Series feature. ... Second-starting Randy Weaver trailed Hedgecock the entire way, finishing 0.418 of a second back. Weaver, fresh off Sept. 22's $10,000 Alabama State Championship victory at East Alabama Motor Speedway in Phenix City, chopped Hedgecock's lead as low as 0.314 of a second as they took the white flag before fading further back at the checkers. ... Matt Henderson improved five positions and placed ninth. ... The race was slowed by one large incident, an opening-lap multicar melee that collected Jake Rainey, Mario Gresham, Josh Ray and Ty Giles, among others. Rainey and Cody Haskins appeared to make contact while battling for eighth, just as the yellow was displayed for debris; the contact sent Rainey spinning in front of the field, making hard contact with Gresham's right rear after Ray launched over Rainey's nose and got airborne. ... The incident necessitated a 10-minute red flag for cleanup. All drivers were okay, but the resulting damage ended the nights for Rainey, Ray and Gresham. ... Ty Giles, who sideswiped Ray, made repairs but continued for only one lap before pulling off. ... The main event went green at 1 a.m. local time and lasted 30 minutes. Twelve drivers completed 60 laps, with 14 running at the finish. ... Race honoree Red Farmer, 92 years young, paced the field in his Late Model (he took a few laps at speed ahead of the event and narrowly avoided the turn-two wall at one point). ... Lee Burdette pulled off on lap 44 and was credited with 16th aboard Farmer's No. F-97 entry.
On the move: Chip Brindle of Chatsworth, Ga., started 18th and finished 10th.
